What to expect from your first appointment

A psychiatrist is a medical doctor with experience in the field of psychiatry which includes mental, physical and behavioural disorders. Psychiatrists assess, diagnose, and treat relatively minor emotional problems to complex mental health conditions/ psychiatric disorders. They can prescribe psychiatric medication and other medical treatments. They often need to order and perform medical investigations such as blood tests and radiological investigations. Although it is preferable that psychologists or physicians refer patients to psychiatrists, patients can also make an appointment without a referral.

Rates

The practice charges private rates as recommended by the Health Man Psychiatry Costing Guide. All accounts are the sole responsibility of the patient until paid in full. A card machine is available at the practice. Unfortunately, we don’t accept cash or cheques. The practice has signed contracts with some medical schemes and their rates apply where applicable. If you belong to a medical aid the practice is not contracted into, you will have to pay upfront and send the statement to your medical aid for reimbursement.

PMB conditions

Prescribed Minimum Benefits (PMB) are a set of defined benefits to ensure that all medical scheme members have access to certain minimum health services, regardless of the benefit option they have selected. The aim is to provide people with continuous care to improve their health and well-being and to make healthcare more affordable. If your condition is one of the PMB conditions, you can motivate for extra funds. Similarly, once your medications have been approved by your medical scheme, you can often motivate for them to go onto chronic medications to prevent the depletion of your day to day funds.

For your convenience we have attached PMB and chronic medication application forms from certain medical aids. Other medical aids require a clinical letter of motivation from the treating doctor with a treatment plan to request for extra funds. Of importance is that medical aids need to be notified when any changes are made to chronic scripts and PMB benefits need to be reapplied for annually.
